"As a national security representative told Lucy Dalglish, director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, “We’re not going to subpoena reporters in the future. We don’t need to. We know who you’re talking to."

— Edward Wasserman writes about the Obama administration’s harsh line on prosecuting whistleblowers in the Miami Herald. The assertion is that there’s been little coverage of the charges due to a shift in focus from journalists to the sources themselves, which so far, looks to be working for the feds.

"We somehow expected President Obama to be both the head of state and the leader of a social movement. And it just led to wholesale confusion."

"The Republicans, to be sure, are still plenty full of crazy. The ideological zeal remains almost fully intact, but the political zeal – the sheer bloody-minded insistence that steadfastness would invariably bring triumph – is always the first to flag."

— In another interesting example at the Obama administration’s penchant for long-term strategy objectives, it seems as if Republicans would be best served by sitting on their hands and giving Obama nothing to define himself against, keeping him from playing the lesser of two evils card for the rest of the year.

"The conservative article of faith that hard work and determination guarantee economic security is a now a cruel lie. People lose jobs because of shifts in global trade patterns, because of new technologies, and because of macroeconomic currents beyond their control. This is the nature of a dynamic capitalist economy, and to acknowledge it and the need for government countermeasures is in no way to repudiate the considerable virtues of the system."

No veto on NDAA

Looks like the White House just released a statement saying there’ll be no veto of the National Defense Authorization Act, you know, the one with all of that indefinite imprisonment and crazy police state-y language.

Which really just means it’s time to freshen up that passport, dust off your jacket, gas up the car and line up at the Canadian border.

At which point you’ll vanish forever and be charged with whatever.
